Suggested Use: To stimulate healthy digestion, enjoy approximately ¼ teaspoon (1.2 mL) of our bitters before or after meals (not to exceed 8 times per day)! Start small in your serving: everyone's body is different, and many people find that a very small serving can be quite sufficient. If the bitter taste is especially rare in your diet, your digestion will fire up with just a very small amount of the bitters.* Try the refillable, travel-sized mouth spray to spritz directly onto the tongue!

Q. Do bitters really work as a digestive aid?

A. Yes! Bitters stimulate our body’s innate digestive response and optimize digestive function. They trigger the digestive system to produce the body’s endogenous digestive enzymes, secrete bile, and balance HCl levels in the stomach. To prime digestion use our bitters 10-15 minutes before you eat! For best results, take straight or spray in your mouth with our mouth spray–you need to taste the bitter flavor to get full effect! Bitters can also be used for acute needs like upset stomach, indigestion, or occasional heartburn–take them after a meal or whenever you need them! Read more about digestive bitters on our About Bitters page.

Q. Can I use the digestive bitters while pregnant and/or breastfeeding?

A. Our chamomile bitters are suitable for occasional nausea and heartburn during pregnancy. Our original, citrus, and maple bitters are not safe for pregnancy; the gentian and angelica in them are herbs that are not recommended during pregnancy.

All flavors of our digestive bitters can be used with caution while nursing; please stay within the recommended dosage and consult your healthcare practitioner.

Q. What is the difference between the 4 flavors of digestive bitters?

A. The original, citrus, and maple flavors all have the same basic formula with different natural flavors added. The maple flavor has a touch of organic maple syrup, the original flavor has a spicier & the most bitter flavor, and the citrus flavor has more organic citrus essential oils. The chamomile bitters are a little different; they are our only bitters formula that contains chamomile, and they are free of citrus, fennel, & essential oils, so that they can be enjoyed occasionally during pregnancy and by more folks with sensitivities!

I love these bitters! I keep my dropper bottle on my dining table (the label is also very attractive) to remind me to take them before each meal. It is the first thing I do when I sit down with my plate–drop some bitters on my tongue, take some deep breaths, consciously slow myself down and relax, and let the magic of the bitters send its messages to begin sending my digestive juices flowing. I find that I have no digestive problems when I use these bitters, and I actually look forward to this taste to initiate every meal. Thank you for producing such a superior product!

These are, by far, my favorite bitters! Not only do they assist with digestion, they also help to curb my cravings for sweets! I’m so grateful for this formula. I’d have to say that the new Apple Cider Vinegar bitters come in close second!

I am excitedly sharing the Original Bitters with a group of other health care providers at the Healthy Kitchens Healthy Lives conference out in Napa Valley CA. After several long days of travel these bitters are a welcome remedy for GI upset. Thumbs up all around!

I do essential oils by a top brand name, and while they work for everything I need, I have not been able to tame by unruly stomach. I now know dairy is my primary enemy but these bitters have completely changed my life. If I know I will be eating bad food, or even have a problematic stomach day, I reach for these bitters every time. I hate the taste, but I have near immediate relief on stomach aches and heart burn, so it is worth it. I also have veggie capsules that I will put it in. I take one every morning and one at night. I have had no issues since altering my diet and taking bitters daily.

Digestive bitters have easily become a part of my daily routine and I can feel the difference in my digestion, it’s improved so much since regularly including the bitters. I’ve been trying different kinds and I’ve had a hard time deciding if the Maple or Original is my favorite but I think it’s a tie 😉

I have consistently found that six sprays of digestive bitters on the back of my tongue relieves feeling full or experiencing gas around meals. Thank you for such a effective product.

The combination of herbs helps, but considering how much of the product is actually alcohol and water I believe the price is really inflated and consumers can do just as well by buying the herbs themselves for a lot less money. Companies like this, that market themselves as healthful, mindful and all about healing, but are really about making a huge profit, are quite disappointing.

  10. Hello Maddie,

While our products are made with ethanol and water, these ingredients are more properly called “solvents”: they extract the plants’ chemistry, leaving behind material like cellulose that doesn’t contribute to medicinal activity. It’s akin to a cup of tea: yes, the first “ingredient” is water, but the water is infused with specific botanical constituents. We average between 125mg and 250mg of plant extractives for every 1mL (about a dropper-full) of our extracts, which makes each 1mL close to capsule in terms of the amount of herbal material delivered (and much more concentrated than a standard cup of tea).

There are a few advantages to using solvents (like tea, or the tinctures we make) over just consuming raw herbs. Liquid botanical extracts bypass the need for our digestive system to break down plant cell walls or fungal chitin layers to get at the active chemistry. Liquids also enter our bodies more quickly: sometimes, if held in the mouth, capillary absorption can take less than five minutes though absorption through stomach and small intestine takes 10-30 minutes depending on food intake. Ethanol has the additional advantage of making a very shelf-stable extract (unlike tea, raw herbs or powders): tinctures can retain potency for years if kept out of the sun and heat. Furthermore, contaminant levels are always lower in alcohol tincture than they are in raw herbs: bacteria and mold can’t grow (or, in some cases, even survive), and heavy metals are very poorly extracted in an alcohol/water mix (almost all herbs have at least trace levels of heavy metal contamination, and extraction in alcohol virtually eliminates these).

Finally, there’s the simple matter of convenience: a liquid is easily transported and can be immediately mixed with almost anything (raw herbs and powders are less simple in this regard).

For all these reasons, we’ve chosen to feature the vibrancy, flavor, and medicinal potency of the plants we love by using liquid extraction. Rather than simply being a “stabilizer”, alcohol and water help you get more of the medicine from the herbs we use. A 60mL bottle of liquid bitters delivers 60 doses that represent about 125mg of herbs per dose – but more bioavailable, faster-acting, contaminant-free, and convenient than pills or raw material.
